Land-based industries include those that operate in agriculture, horticulture and animal care. The land-based sector in the North West employs 2.8 per cent of the region’s workforce and 9 per cent of the UK’s land-based workforce. The sector supports large numbers of jobs in industries such as tourism and leisure, food and beverage manufacturing and the manufacture of wood products, as well as supporting related service industries including agricultural machinery. More than 80 per cent of the North West’s land area is maintained by enterprises in this sector.
The focus of the Sector Development Group (SDG) is to provide more opportunities for vocational learners to progress to higher education and further promote land-based qualifications to students at level three.
The main achievement of the SDG has been to collaboratively design and deliver a new foundation degree in Ecology and Green Space Management. One higher education institution, two further education colleges and one private consultancy combined to make the foundation degree active only nine months after it was initially discussed, while offering multiple progression options from the course.
Ongoing special projects include investigating a potential education programme. There is a collaborative project with the Health and Social Care Sector Development Group which focuses around recreation and leisure in urban green space.
