ICT and Computing

The ICT and Computing sector is composed of a variety of professions including IT outsourcing, internet services and web design, technology oriented consulting, technical development, systems analysis, programming, systems testing and technology sales. Nationwide, there are 580,000 employed with companies whose primary business is IT. A further 590,000 are employed in sectors that see their role as IT-oriented. In the North West, the total IT workforce is 116,871.

The Sector Development Group (SDG) has made strides this year developing key partnerships and completing a research project on student destination post-higher education. Progression Agreements in ITC and Computing have been successfully negotiated.

The group is currently creating a GMSA Computing foundation degree in conjunction with Pendleton College, Bolton Community College and MANCAT. Future demand will be to address the significant skills gap in development and implementation of IT systems and services, especially at management level.
